Translations<\/h2>\n

Translating a magazine is a project normally spanning one to two months, which is considerably longer than your average 2 to 3 days\u2019 work for translating a contract. That\u2019s fine by us, because we love to explore new topics and immerse ourselves in different worlds for a longer period of time – it\u2019s one of the things we love about translating. So, how do we go about the creative process of a magazine?<\/p>\n

Arrangements<\/h2>\n

With a view to transparency, it is in the interest of all parties involved that they agree to clear fees and turnaround time. Experience has taught us that the creation of a magazine never goes without ups and downs. And that\u2019s fine, as long as we can communicate clearly so that everyone is on the same page throughout the project.<\/p>\n

Planning<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s all about strict planning when making a magazine and, ideally, the team is well attuned to each other. Therefore, we prefer to be present at one or more of the editorial meetings, so that we can get to know all the makers.<\/p>\n

Roles<\/h2>\n

In other words: who does what. These roles should be clear from the get-go for the creation process to run smoothly, since there are many players in the field. From the writers, editors and chief editors to the designers, photographers, translators and printers.<\/p>\n

Audience<\/h2>\n

There\u2019s nothing more important than knowing about your readers. This counts for everyone working on the magazine, including also the translators, since they need to find the right tone of voice, style, terminology and length of sentences to match the audience.<\/p>\n

Overview<\/h2>\n

You\u2019ve probably already gotten the gist: we at Tupelo Translations do not only translate for you, we also look at the bigger picture. This seems particularly valuable when there are multiple writers. For example, do they all refer to a person or company in the same way? Is the use of quotation marks consistent? Is a particular word written with a capital or a small letter? Do the facts check out? In short: we don\u2019t only translate for you, we give valuable feedback.<\/p>\n

Final editing round<\/h2>\n

Before the magazine is sent to the printing company, we go over the translated texts in the layout for a last editing round. We prefer this approach because, in a final reading, we often see some words or sentences that could be improved just a tad when seen in their \u201cnatural habitat\u201d, the magazine proof.<\/p>\n
