If you are going to cohabit with someone and/or are going to buy a house together with someone and you are not married, then it would be wise to have a cohabitation agreement drawn up by a civil-law notary. In it, you lay down any arrangements about, for example, the division of expenses and the right to a partner’s pension, so that you both know what to expect; both during the relationship, but also if you decide to break up or if one of the partners dies.

Provisions

In a cohabitation agreement, arrangements are made, for example, about:

  • any private assets
  • the joint household costs
  • the life insurance premiums
  • the household effects
  • the jointly inhabited house
  • the termination of the cohabitation
  • provisions in case of death
